With restricted time, the plan was never to cycle the whole circumference of the island just to get away somewhere without the car, cycle touring/camping and having an adventure. We wanted plenty of 'down time' as Adrian won't have spent much time with the children this school holiday. We will follow cycle routes where they are available, but the rest of the time we will go in search on the quieter roads...
Day 1: Sunday 14th August
Travel from Bristol to Portsmouth where we plan to park the car somewhere and cycle to the Ferry port to catch the car ferry as foot passengers to Fishbourne. From there we will cycle about 10km to East Cowes to Waverley Park campsite.
Day 2: Monday 15th August
We plan to cycle to Osbourne house and back - as no visit to the IOW is complete without a trip there!
Day 3: Tuesday 16th August
Cross on the chain-link Ferry to West Cowes and follow the 'Red Squirrel' trail down through Newport and south. I believe some of this is off-road and I'm a little worried about the quality of the path with the weight Adrian and I will be carrying, so we will see how we go. We finish the day on B-roads heading to Ninham Country Holidays campsite just outside Shanklin. About 25km
Days 4 & 5: Wednesday and Thursday 17th & 18th August
Two days to explore the south - by bike, foot or public transport, go to the beaches, swim in the pool and generally relax
Day 6: Friday 19th August
Cycle round the east coast, hopefully with a stop at the Bembridge windmill on the way. Camping that night in Upton at Roebeck country Park. About 23km
Day 7: Saturday 20th August
A short cycle back to Fishbourne ferry port to head back to Portsmouth, collect the car and head back to Bristol.
So, two long days of cycling and lots of little bits.
